I moved to Panama to play internet poker. My rationale was simple, I wanted to escape another European winter and the late nights playing online against the Americans who are on a different time zone.
I’d travelled extensively throughout America and Latin America and when you add the cheap cost of living and the high standard of living and the great weather all year around, Panama seemed the perfect choice.
What I had’nt realised was that poker’s popularity in Panama City is booming. On any night of the week there are at least 5 tables going and as many as 10 on the weekends.
The new Veneto Casino has a sweet poker room and great action every night of the week. The standard game in panama is $5 $5 no limit, minimum $100, unlimited maximum buy in. Most players buy in for only $200 or $300 but as the evening progresses the games can get pretty big. We often get a $5 $10 and $10 $20 game going as well, and for those who aren’t faint hearted there’s a $25 $50 no limit Omaha game going most nights in a private room. YES, you heard me right NO LIMIT OMAHA! Only place in the world its played that I know of. Serious money gets tossed about in that room, I promise you that.
The Majestic Casino is hosting satellites for the majestic poker tour and will be hosting a $2000 main event in late may. The Hotel Panama usually has 2 tables of $5 $5 no limit holdem going, while you can often find a nice $5 $10 game at the Royal Casino in the VIP room.
